Globalizing the Culture Wars: US Conservatives, African Churches, & Homophobia

U.S. conservatives have successfully recruited a significant number of prominent African religious leaders to a campaign that restricts the human rights of LGBT people. While in recent years we have seen stronger movement for equality on LGBT issues in America, the movement has gone backwards in Africa, in part by our own successes. American conservative religious leaders travel to Africa and advocate for human rights violations against LGBT people including laws that penalize homosexual acts with the death penalty. Just as the United States and other northern societies routinely dump our outlawed or expired chemicals, pharmaceuticals, machinery, and cultural detritus on African and other Third World countries, we now export a political discourse and public policies our own society has discarded as outdated and dangerous. This enlightening article highlights these atrocities and provides valuable answers.
