African Primates in 2020: Taking Stock Across the Continent

There’s no denying that 2020 was a year like no other for Africa’s fragile primate populations, and for the 23 primate sanctuaries that make up the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA), existing threats combined with the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic made 2020 among their most challenging years yet. PASA’s 2020 Census Report reveals that, despite the unprecedented obstacles, PASA-member sanctuaries continued to expertly care for more than 3,000 great apes and monkeys across the African continent. What’s more: not a single sanctuary has ceased operations as a result of the pandemic.
